Start with the furniture, not the umbrella
Measure the length and width of your table, the seating pulled out around it and the paths people use. A canopy diameter is a starting point, but the sun does not remain overhead: shade can move away from the seats in the afternoon. Sketch the area at the times when you normally use it. Leave room for opening doors and for the canopy to tilt or swivel without hitting walls.
Centre pole versus cantilever
A centre-pole parasol can suit a table with a suitable aperture or a standalone base in a compact space. An offset or cantilever mast removes the pole from the middle of a seating group, yet requires ballast at the side and space for the canopy swing. A larger cantilever is not necessarily better for a narrow balcony.
Think about the complete base system
Cross-shaped feet are commonly intended for extra weights or paving slabs, not to stand on their own. Some bundles include fillable plates, but those plates must still be filled as instructed. The safe amount and arrangement depend on the exact model, material and prevailing conditions. Never improvise a base specification or assume the product is secure in strong winds.
Check what comes in the delivery
Compare the package contents line by line: umbrella, cover, stand, weights or plates, straps and instructions. Confirm pole diameter where using an existing stand. A complete kit may offer better practical value than the apparently cheaper canopy once missing items are included.
Understand weather and UV claims
UV-protection factors in product copy describe manufacturer claims, not a substitute for shade-seeking or sun-safe behaviour. Water-repellent fabric can still let driven rain through seams. Close and secure parasols when unattended and obey the specific wind instructions rather than leaving them open as permanent shelters.
A five-point buying checklist
Before ordering, write down the usable patio size, preferred seating position, mast or stand footprint, available ballast and storage space. Then check the current seller instructions for clearances and supplied components. You can compare product formats in our separate garden parasol comparison; it illustrates how a 2 m table canopy differs from 3 m cantilever packages and solar-lighting options.
