How to Choose a Garden Dining Set for a UK Patio

Choose the right garden dining set for a UK patio with practical advice on seating, chair clearance, folding furniture, materials and outdoor storage.

When you buy a garden dining set, the furniture is only part of the space it will occupy. Chairs need room to pull out, people need space to walk behind them and a parasol may require additional clearance. A useful buying plan starts with the patio, not the product photograph.

Start with the people you seat every week

If the garden is usually used by two or four people, a compact four-seat set may be easier to live with than an eight-seat suite. Larger tables make sense if you entertain frequently, but consider an extendable model for occasional guests. Check what the retailer means by “six-seat”: is it six separate chairs, a bench arrangement or a mixture?

Measure table size and chair movement

Write down the intended table length and width, then measure chairs in their normal occupied position. Allow further room for the chairs to move backwards when someone stands up, plus a usable path around the table. This matters especially for reclining garden chairs, which may occupy significantly more depth when tilted.

Folding, stacking and year-round use

Folding wooden chairs are practical if the patio also has another purpose. Stackable chairs may be better where there is a shed or covered storage area. Measure the folded or stacked furniture, not just the assembled footprint. Cushion storage should be planned separately; water-repellent fabric is not necessarily designed to sit wet outdoors for long periods.

Materials: understand the upkeep

  • Acacia and eucalyptus: natural materials with a warm appearance, often supplied pre-oiled. They benefit from suitable cleaning and periodic surface care.
  • Aluminium: relatively light and does not require timber oiling. Check surface coatings, fixings and the table-top material.
  • Polyrattan: easy to coordinate with padded seating, but the weave, frame and detachable covers still need care.
  • Glass tabletops: can be easy to clean but need careful handling and should be used according to the manufacturer’s safety instructions.

Five questions before ordering

  1. Can the complete furniture set fit with every chair pulled out?
  2. Are cushions included, removable and washable?
  3. Is the table extendable and, if so, where does the extra length go?
  4. Where will the furniture and cushions be stored in winter?
  5. Does the UK retailer clearly state delivery, returns and replacement-part arrangements?

Which layout is best?

There is no universal winner. For a tight patio, consider a folding four-seat arrangement. For frequent family dining, a six-seat extendable table can offer flexibility. For a larger entertaining space, an eight-seat set may be worthwhile, provided there is still room to circulate. Choose a model by lifestyle, dimensions and maintenance needs before comparing current retail prices.
